School Profile – STMC Marsaskala St. Anne Primary School
St Thomas More College Marsaskala St. Anne Primary School is a large busy multicultural school with many educational opportunities for its students which currently are about 570 pupils. Thirty percent of the current school population is made up of students coming from thirty-two different countries. Ninety of these students originate from thirteen different EU countries while about fifty students come from nineteen countries external to the European Union. This coming together helps students to learn to accept each other, accept those who are different from them, learn to be tolerant and also to show solidarity with those who are in need.
The story of our school started before the Second World War, when Marsaskala was a quiet small fishermen’s hamlet with very few children living there. These students used to receive their education in Villa Mondello. With the increasing resident population, Villa Mondello became too small for the needs of the community and the building of a new and proper school was inevitable.
A new state school was built on an elevated plot of land to the north of the Parish Church. The new school was designed by architect Mr Joe Borg Grech and the master mason was Mr Gregory Schembri who was also involved in the building of the Parish Church. The foundation stone was laid on November 20th 1965 by Prime Minister George Borg Olivier.
The school was named after the village patron St Anne and was blessed by the Archbishop Michael Gonzi with the presence of Fr Joe Carabott who was the parish priest of the locality. A statue bearing the patron St Anne was also blessed by the Archbishop.
The first first intake of students amounted to 150 students. At that time, the building was also used as a summer camp as well as a Teacher Exchange Service between local and foreign educators.
The cost to build this school amounted to around 40,000 Maltese Pounds.
Time was passing by and with the building of many modern apartments for the community, the student population continued to grow progressively and today the school caters for nearly 600 students including a number of foreigners from the European Union Countries and from other countries around the world.
The school consists of very airy comfortable classrooms and beautiful natural surroundings with plenty of open space and gardens. Not very long time ago, a Maltese Girna, also known as a corbelled stone hut was built in its grounds.
The school has a very active School Council which works as a team with the school leadership team in all aspects of the children’s education.
At STMC Marsaskala St. Anne Primary School we aim to give every child an equal opportunity to learn and develop socially, educationally and personally in a stimulating and friendly environment. Each child is encouraged to develop consideration and respect for other people in school and in the surrounding community.
