The children had the opportunity to learn about various sea creatures particularly dolphins and turtles. They first learnt that around our islands, particularly close to Marsaskala, many have seen dolphins swimming. Unfortunately, a dolphin can swim close to shore because it might be sick or hurt. The children learnt that if they encounter this creature or any other sea creatures on shore, they have to call the animal rescue team on: 99 99 95 05. They also learnt the steps that the rescue team follows in order to save a dolphin.
Then they also had a story telling session about various sea creatures that live under the sea. One of them is the sea turtle. Around the Maltese islands one can find three different types of sea turtles. The children also learnt that sea turtles might come on shore to lay their eggs. These then hatch in around 60 days. One sea turtle can lay about 1,000 eggs and it is estimated that only one of them will be able to grow old enough and lay its own eggs. The children then were told that most of these turtles (and also other sea creatures) die because of our own waste. Therefore, it is important to always clean our beaches and try to use less plastic. At the end of the session the children themselves wanted to clean up the beach around them and in a couple of minutes they managed to collect lots of waste.
